Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown - 1312 Words

Within Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story Young Goodman Brown (p.317), Young Goodman Brown travels through a dark and mysterious forest late at night. Ignoring the pleas of his pure wife Faith, he ventures deep into the woods with many dangers around him, only to emerge in the morning a changed man with bewildered views on his own Puritan life and the Puritan community around him. At the cause for this change in mindset, the dream of an old man symbolizing the devil appears, showing him the community partaking in a ritual which can only be described as an act of worshipping the devil. This symbol is one of the more obvious ones found within the story of Young Goodman Brown, some are equally obvious while others may require more in-depth analyzing. These symbols are so prevalent in the story that they all have meanings that advance the story and create more depth within the characters. Cystic Fibrosis Essays - Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Health

Cystic Fibrosis Caucasian people carries at least one of the fatal defective genes that cause cystic fibrosis, CF, or mucoviscidosis (in Europe) although carriers don't show any signs of the disease. Therefore, 10 million2 people carry the defective gene and aren't aware of it. Consequently, it makes it one of the most common genetic defect in the United States. CF is a autosomal recessive gene. That means that it may, but doesn't always skip generations. In order to get this disease, both parents must be carriers. If one parent has CF and the other one is not a carrier than there is a 100% chance that their child will be a carrier. If one parent has CF and the other is a carrier than the child has a 50% chance of having CF and a 50% chance of just being a carrier. If both parents are carriers than their child will have a 25% of having CF, a 50% chance of being a carrier and a 25% chance of not being affected. CF is common in both males and females, there is not a specific sex that it is more common in. How does a person know if they have CF? There are many symptoms to this deadly disease including: salty tasting skin, constant coughing, large amounts of mucus, trouble gaining weight, frequent greasy, foul smelling bowel, growths in the nose (nasal polyps) and clubbed or enlarged fingertips and toe tips is another symptom. Now there are many tests that can be done to find put if a person has CF. One way which CF can be detected is to observe the symptoms. A person doesn't need to have all the symptoms in order to have cystic fibrosis, but they usually show most of them. Another way are different genetic testing. Doctors can now do genetic testing for CF, but about 10 years ago they couldn't. In 1989, the location where the of the defective gene on chromosome number 7 is was discovered by Francis S. Collins from University of Michigan. Tests can now be taken to see if an unborn child is infected with CF such tests are amniocentesis, chronic villus biopsy3 and a removal of cells from the embryo during invitro. Many years ago, New York4 had a heat wave, and the hospitals became overwhelmed with dehydrated CF children. These children became dehydrated much quicker than children without the disorder. Thus eventually resulting in the formation of the sweat test which is now the standard test. Doctors place a pad or filter paper on a patients arm or back. A chemical called Pilocarpine, makes a burst of electricity to produce more sweat. Then the pad is wrapped in plastic and is sent to a lab to get analyzed. The doctors then would look for a high chloride content in the sweat. Another test is a blood test that is administered 3 days after a baby is born. It is called Immunoreactive Trypsinogen5 if that comes back positive it is then double checked with a sweat test. Furthermore CF causes the sweat glands to release about 5 times6 as much salt as a normal person would. This is why the skin of a CF patients may taste salty. They don't sweat more, but when they perspire more salt is excreted. This causes the person to dehydrate. CF is a disorder that causes the body to produce larger amount of mucus than normal. In a normal person, mucus in the lungs helps get rid of germs and bacteria in the air. In a CF patients the lungs become covered with a sticky mucus that is hard to remove and promotes infection from bacteria. Over time infections cause the lungs to become extremely weak, therefore ending in respiratory failure. Also CF affects the digestive tract. The overproduction of mucus causes the pancreatic ducts to be clogged. Therefore preventing necessary enzymes to digest fats and proteins. Without those enzymes CF patients can't gain weight. The undigested proteins and fats pass right through the body creating smelly bowel. In some cases this malnutrition causes people to die when they are only children. Also it is more common for people with cystic fibrosis to develop digestive tract cancer7. High levels of the protein CFTR (which the gene makes) are found in the digestive tissues. Doctors explain this increased risk of cancer because CF induces change in the digestive tract organs that causes the cell turnover. Patients with gastrointestinal tract problem should get examined for such tumors. Women with CF can

John Singleton and the black new wave essays

John Singleton and the black new wave essays The dictionary definenition of an auteur is a film director who is considered as having a dominant creative role. This is extremely vague, as you could say that almost all directors have a strong role in the creative process of film. If this statement were true then there would be very little debate on whether a director is an auteur. In my opinion, an auteur can be identified by his or hers approach to narrative, by visual style, by the choice of themes and values that run through each film, and the way that he or she becomes a star in their own right. I have chosen to focus on John Singleton. At the time his first film was released Singleton was fresh out of film school, he had grown up surrounded by the everyday death and violence of the South Central Los Angeles district famed for it gangs and its low life expectancy. With the release of Boyz n the Hood Singleton created the black gangster genre of film, this film is the benchmark of Singletons visual style and his themes. The film deals with racism, the importance of family, tragedy, and the significance of the choices made by the characters and the consequences they hold. One of the strongest themes Singleton expolores is his central characters fear of death as the motivation for the violence. These themes can be found in all of Singletons films to date. But its the way that he chooses to present and explore these themes that is interesting. He works on two different levels; he uses colours, the way that he positions the camera to move the story forward, and juxtaposition and blocking to communicate meaning. He is also renowned for his films to hit the audience with the themes in such a way that it provokes a reaction. Singletons use of the same themes and messages elevate him to the standing of auteur, he leaves his signature across his films with the specific themes ...

Othello Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 5

Othello - Essay Example The heart of Othello is opened for Desdemona, but his mind remains closed. We can see that love is different with different characters of the play. The main hero Othello understands that trust is very important thing in marriage and it can’t be built in one day. However, his foes acted too rapidly and did not give him a time to build trust. The deep feeling of Othello and Desdemona appeared instantly and was built mostly on passion, but Desdemona managed to turn it into strong attachment not realized by Othello: "It cannot be true that she really loves me†¦if she loves me, then there must be something wrong with her" (Shakespeare). Desdemona succeeded to protect her marriage in the face of her family. She protected her choice before Brabantio and Gratiano, praising her husband’s best qualities. Othello was clever and purposeful. He proved to be a successful leader and commanded deep respect his people. Within the play, Desdemona’s character transforms gradua lly. Having married Othello, Desdemona acted against her father’s will and in the teeth of the Renaissance public opinion. She is â€Å"a woman who combines spiritual and physical love for Othello and who is courageous and independent in her judgments, often stubbornly so† (Hall, 1999: 67). Firstly, she had fully relied on her father, but in her married life, she had to submit to her husband. On Cyprus, she supported him in career making and dealt with household with pleasure. Othello really loved his wife, their marriage was concluded due to deep love and passion. However, this passion was too strong and he could not control its power. It captured him so deeply that he did not want to see the truth. Jealousy is the power that appeared to kill Othello. It was Iago who helped this destructive feeling occupy the soul of the mail hero of the play. Stupid Iago thought that he knows everything about jealousy but he did not take into

Compare the Taiwan political system and the Hong Kong political system Essay

Compare the Taiwan political system and the Hong Kong political system - Essay Example The legislature has 30 seats occupied people elected by the electorate while the remaining 40 out of 70 seats that comprise the legislative council are filled by people elected by permanent residents of Hong Kong through universal suffrage. The region has a unitary government system and is globally accepted as an administrative region of the People’s Republic of China. On its part, Taiwan (Republic of China) is a sovereign state and democratic republic (Clark, 2012). It has its own constitution, armed forces, and independent president. The situation of Taiwan as a state is currently under contention as it is claimed by the People’s Republic of China. The government is divided into five branches (Yuan); the Executive, Legislature, judiciary, control, and civil service examination. The state is headed by a president who is elected by the people (Makeham & Hsiau 2005). Generally, the state is based on a semi-presidential system. The president appoints members of cabinet including the premier who is the president of the Executive branch of government. The state has a unicameral legislature that accommodates 113 seats out of which 73 are occupied by individuals elected by popular vote from single- member constituencies. The rest of the seats are filled by individuals voted in by different means. Like Hong Kong, the economic system is capitalist in nature. In conclusion, the two entities have a number of similarities and differences. While Taiwan is a sovereign state, Hong Kong is an administrative region. While Hong Kong has four government pillars, Taiwan has five government pillars. While the Chief Executive heads the executive arm of government in Hong Kong, the president heads the government in Taiwan. The two enjoy a significant level of autonomy from the Republic of China. The two have a capitalist
